MANTUA HISTORY GEM
By Scott Larkin
Mantua’s “Underwater”; Threat:
In 1914, a proposal aimed to turn Mantua
valley into a reservoir, displacing all 300
residents. Led by engineer Arthur J. Chadfield
and backed by Utah investors, the plan
involved building a dam in Box Elder Canyon to
irrigate 10,000 acres. The project, estimated at
over $1 million, failed due to high buyout costs
and strong resistance from Mantua’s tight-knit
community of Danish immigrants
YOUTH TOWN COUNCIL:
The Youth Town Council is collecting new,
small stuffed animals for the Mantua Fire
Department from March 2–26. Donations will
help comfort children during emergency calls
and can be dropped off at Town Hall. Thank
you for supporting Mantua’s youth volunteers.
If you cannot attend and would like to, contact
Karen Nelson (435) 723-8727 or
Janice Johnson (435) 730-1392.

Early History of Mantua
Mantua was founded in 1863 by Danish families sent by LDS Church leaders to cultivate flax for cloth. The settlement was first called Little Valley, then Flaxville, and at one-point Little Copenhagen due to its Danish population. Although the flax project was not successful for cloth, it proved useful for making rope and thread. Early residents initially lived in dugouts, later moving to log cabins arranged in a fort for protection. In 1864, the community was officially planned and named Mantua by Lorenzo Snow, after his birthplace in Ohio. The name means “beautiful gown,” inspired by the valley’s striking fall colors. Mantua became an incorporated town in 1911.
Historic Mantua Commentary
Indian Trail Pass, situated in the Northeast corner of Mantua valley was established and utilized extensively by Shoshone Native Americans to circumvent the surrounding steep mountains and canyons. Indian Trail pass was a significant landmark on a very bold, well-work Native American Trail. The tail ran from the “lower, Salt Lake valley, though Mantua valley, all the way to Snake Lake (now known as Bear Lake)
