What is the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted on July 26, 1990, to eliminate discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The ADA is a comprehensive civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability in areas including employment, public accommodations, state and local government programs, services, and activities, as well as communications. Its purpose is to ensure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, equivalent service, and economic self-sufficiency for people with disabilities.
What is a Disability?
Under the ADA, a person is considered to have a disability if they have a physical, emotional, or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, have a record of such impairment, or are perceived as having such an impairment. Major life activities include:

Town of Mantua's Responsibility Under the ADA
Title II of the ADA applies to local government entities, including the Town of Mantua. This means that no qualified individual with a disability will be excluded from participation in or denied the benefits of the Town’s programs, services, or activities. The Town of Mantua is committed to:
- Assessing the accessibility of its services and facilities
- Creating and implementing a plan to remove barriers for individuals with disabilities
- Designating an ADA Coordinator to oversee compliance and accessibility issues
