Pony Express Rider Samuel Alonzo Whitne

The one-legged man who rode the local Pony Express mail route between Logan and Brigham City, Utah, was Samuel Alonzo Whitney.

He was the first person to carry mail from Cache Valley to Brigham City.

While he later lost a leg at age 50 due to an accident with timber, he served locally as a Pony Express Rider, being the first to carry mail from Cache Valley (where Logan is located) to Brigham City. He was known for his ability to befriend Native Americans and speak multiple Native American languages, serving as an interpreter.

Samuel Alonzo Whitney was born on November 10, 1840, in Palmyra, Union County, Ohio, United States. He arrived in Utah in 1847. He later lived and died in Millville, Cache County, Utah.
