Windermere

Approaching Mantua from Brigham City, the landscape shifts as you pass the massive concrete retaining wall on your right. Immediately beyond it, a dense grove of trees appears below the road’s right shoulder, nestled at the river’s level. To the left, more trees line the far bank of the water below the roads shoulder .Taking the first Mantua exit, you’ll parallel the overpass as the town begins to unfold, revealing quiet homes and lush greenery to your right."

Many, many years ago when the original, small road ( highway 89) wound its way from Brigham City to Mantua there was no overpass or off ramps there. No concrete retaining wall. Highway 89 went through Mantua, not around it.

There was only a beautiful little forest and crystal mountain streams in its place where Box Elder Creek and Big Creek converge and slowly meander along. It must have been a very beautiful sight, because the people of Mantua named that area after a place some of them were obviously familiar with. They named it Windermere after Lake Windermere in Northwest England in the Lake District. Lake Windermere is famous for its stunning mountain scenery, and its connection to writers like Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth.
