Sardine Canyon
The first major, all-weather road that would eventually become Highway 89 was constructed through the true “Sardine Canyon” and into Mantua in 1924.
Before this time, the road was a summer-only route, often closed by snow in the winter. The new highway, completed in September 1924, was a significant improvement, providing an all-year road connecting Mantua to Wellsville and the Cache Valley. The modern alignment of Highway 89, which bypasses the true "Sardine Canyon," was built in 1960.
