Mantua and the Shoshones
Mantua and the Shoshones
The connection between the Shoshone Indian people and Mantua, Utah, is a deep and significant one, rooted in the history of the region. Many Shoshones camped in Mantua Valley in the summertime. Mantua was located on a well worn Native American trail. Mantua is part of the traditional Shoshone homeland. The area around Mantua, including the entire Bear River Valley and parts of what is now Box Elder County, was the traditional homeland and gathering ground for the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation. For centuries, the Shoshone people lived a nomadic lifestyle in the Great Basin, moving with the seasons to hunt, fish, and gather resources. The Wasatch Mountains and the valleys like Mantua provided a rich source of food and water.
