Early Mantua lodging for travelers
Rasmus Jeppsen was a member of one of the original twelve Danish families sent by Lorenzo Snow to settle in the valley of Mantua for the growing and processing of flax.
Rasmus eventually built a beautiful, substantial two level home north of Big Creek ( pronounced “Big Crick”) on the north end of the valley. Everyone living north of Big Creek/Crick has historically been referred to as “”Northenders” by everyone else in the valley.
The Rasmus Jeppsen home is no longer there and has been gone for many decades. It was located between Harvey Facer’s and Clair Halling’s homes.
Rasmus opened up his home to provide lodging for travelers. You may hear an old timer referring to a hotel in the early settlement days of mantua. It was actually Rasmus Jeppsen’s home that provided lodging. So, now you know.
According to the Jeppsen family oral history Brigham Young stayed at Rasmus Jeppsen’s home at least two times while traveling.
