Adobes

The site for the yard was chosen where the clay was most suitable. The lime was made at the old lime kiln just north of town. A piece of ground was cleared off and made smooth. This served as a place to mix the mud. A pile of clay and lime was put in the center of the clearing and mixed with water. The was done partly with shovels and then finished by horses tramping over it and partly by bare-footed men tromping it. When the mud was thoroughly mixed it was slapped into molds. Five or six adobes were molded in one container. The molded adobes were turned out to dry. When they were dry, they were placed in cone-shaped piles and were ready for use.
